What is the Bill about?

This Bill is about saving lives and reducing injuries on Irish roads. One of the provisions of the Bill is to lower the legal Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) level for drinking and driving for the current limit of 80mgs to 50mgs (for qualified drivers) and 20mgs (novice & professional drivers).

Mr. Noel Dempsey TD, Minister for Transport, today published the Road Traffic Bill 2009, which provides for a reduced blood alcohol concentration (BAC) for drivers and mandatory testing of drivers involved in collisions. The Bill also includes a number of other amendments to road traffic legislation.

Youth Work Ireland has today called on TD’s to support the Transport Ministers plans to lower the blood alcohol limit to a level similar to most EU countries with superior road safety records. The organisation whose 22 community based members work with abut 50,000 young people around Ireland believes the changes proposed will ensure a safer environment for young people as drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists. The group has urged TD’s resisting the changes to channel their energies into rural transport and other solutions which would benefit the entire rural community.
